Abstract

Poetry is the unrivalled literary form even in this century. It is an old form that exists for more than two thousand years. Having taken a number of dimensions, it continues to exist as a literary form. At the time when pioneer poets of new poetry appearing from South India, there emerged a group of poets who have consumed the new ideas of modern poetry. Cōlaikkiļi is one of them. Cōlaikkiļi (Uthumalebbe Mohamed Atheek) from Kalmunai, East Sri Lanka entered the poetic world in 1980. As an expression of experience, an individual’s poetic abilities could be studied in different ways. Among the poetic form, the ability of expression, poetic techniques and the semantic content, the ability of expression is an important aspect. All poets express their experience. But Cōlaikkiļi differs from them in his ability of the usage of language, imagery, symbolism, blind, subtlity, clarity, briefness, satire, simile, metaphor and contradiction. These abilities of the poet are being studied basing on his poems in the ‘Avaņam’ anthology.
