Abstract

Islamic Sharia, which makes marriage as a rite of passage, also imposes restrictions on polygamy. The Quran and the Sunnah restrict polygamy by imposing strict rules and conditions on it. The purpose of this study is to analyze the extent to polygamy is practiced under the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA) in the Sri Lankan context is compatible with Islamic Sharia. In Muslim countries, its practiced under very strict conditions and it inforce without adequate legal restrictions on Sri Lankan Muslims living as a minority. This study is a qualitative study and is entirely based on secondary data. Previous articles related to the topic have been reviewed and the data obtained have been analyzed through a hypothetical framework.
